A Phillips State Prison inmate was stabbed to death Wednesday night during an altercation with another inmate.
John Bankhead of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the incident occurred at about 6:30 in a sallyport — controlled entryway — within the prison.
A suspect, who has not been charged in the incident yet, was previously sentenced to life imprisonment stemming from a previous murder, Bankhead said.
The victim was serving time for burglary, he added.
The names of those involved are not being released pending the completion of the investigation by the GBI and the Department of Corrections.
Bankhead said the GBI may press charges as early as today.
