Hall County apartment fire injures adult, child

Two people, including a child, suffered minor injuries Tuesday after a mattress fire forced them from their apartment in the 800 block of Davis Street.“The fire was started by a 4-year-old who was playing with a cigarette lighter,” Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada said.“It caught the bed on fire.”One adult and five children were in the apartment.“They were all able to escape,” Canada said.The child suffered a minor injury while leaving the apartment.The adult had “some very minor smoke inhalation,” the chief said.“They both were checked out and treated at the scene.”Firefighters received the call about 3 p.m.The blaze “could have been worse,” Canada said. “Keep things like matches and lighters away from your children.”
