Gwinnett County will soon begin building the underwater portion of a pipeline that will carry up to 40 million gallons a day of treated sewage into Lake Lanier.

A $25 million contract was awarded Tuesday to Oscar Renda Contracting, which will build the final 1.4-mile segment of the 8.4-mile line. The land portions of the pipe are already under construction. Total cost of the entire pipeline will be about $63 million.

Gwinnett officials anticipate the underwater construction will begin by the end of February, with completion in summer 2009.
