Gainesville school board analyzes graduation rate discrepancy

Officials are trying to account for a discrepancy in the high school’s graduation rate.

In 2009, 96 percent of Gainesville High’s senior class walked across the stage and received a diploma. However, the state Department of Education recorded the school’s graduation rate at 73 percent. At the board’s work session Monday, an administrator said to improve the graduation rate in 2010, administrators are finding students who left and did not report enrolling in another school. The graduation rate must be 80 percent in 2010 for the high school to achieve adequate yearly progress.

The board also discussed its concerns regarding furlough pay cuts on top of system pay cuts. The board will revisit cuts in January to see if the system can offset more expected furloughs.
