The $19.2 million resurfacing of Ga. 365 in Hall and Habersham counties is among $92 million in construction contracts that have been awarded by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The project, with a completion date of July 1, 2012, will take place between Ga. 52 in Hall and U.S. 441/Ga. 17 in Habersham.

C.W. Matthews of Marietta has been contracted to do the work.

The DOT announced Tuesday it had awarded 26 contracts total across the state, as part of a construction program it has dubbed RoadWorks2011.

"These projects, along with several already under way and more than $150 million in additional work scheduled to be awarded in early June, will add new capacity and make critical maintenance improvements to Georgia's transportation system," said DOT Commissioner Vance C. Smith Jr.

Many projects will require lane closures and likely result in traffic delays on interstate and state highways across Georgia, officials said.

Teri Pope, spokeswoman in the DOT's Gainesville office, said the Ga. 365 work — the costliest of the 26 projects — is likely to begin in late July.

It "will take six to eight weeks for the contractor to do paperwork and get ready to start work," she said.

Because the road is a heavily traveled commuter and tourist route, the DOT has imposed some work-hour restrictions, Pope said.

Crews can't do any work between 6 and 9 a.m. weekdays in the southbound lanes and 4 and 7 p.m. weekdays in the northbound lanes, and they can't work between 6 a.m. Friday and 9 p.m. Sunday.

"These are peak driving times," Pope said. "... We expect the bulk of the work to happen overnight."
