Empty Bowls luncheon benefits food pantries

Some 400 pottery bowls were made by students from Gainesville High School and Brenau University for the Empty Bowls luncheon held Tuesday at First Baptist Church.

The event was to raise funds for food pantries in the region and was sponsored by North Georgia Community Foundation.

For a $25 donation, each person was able to pick a bowl to keep as a reminder of empty bowls and the fight against hunger. The event was held in conjunction with World Food Day, a worldwide event to increase awareness and spur action to end hunger.

All the food was donated by local restaurants. All proceeds benefit the Georgia Mountain Food Bank, which raises funds for a local food distribution warehouse to serve nonprofit organizations which help the needy.
