Barnes claims tax breaks on house he doesnt own

Roy Barnes has claimed federal and state income tax breaks for depreciation on a house that property records show he doesn’t own.

The information surfaced as the Democratic candidate for governor has been insisting Republican opponent Nathan Deal pays too little in taxes.

On his returns for 2009, Barnes and his wife claimed $9,091 in depreciation on a house in Marietta. Cobb County property records show his daughter and son-in-law have owned the home since 2007.

The deductions likely saved the former governor about $3,182 on his federal taxes and about $545 on his state taxes, based on applicable tax rates.
