Drunken boating arrests over Fourth holiday down considerably from 2017
07072018 DNR RANGERS

With the Independence Day holiday falling in the middle of the week, Georgia Department of Natural Resources law enforcement officers made a third of the boating under the influence arrests it did in 2017.

There were 11 BUIs reported across all law enforcement regions Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. During July 1-4 in 2017, DNR made 34 arrests statewide.

That ratio held for Lake Lanier with two BUI arrests this year, compared to 10 arrests last year.

There were also fewer boating incidents on Lake Lanier, down to two incidents this year from four cases in 2017.

DNR spokesman Mark McKinnon said the two incidents on Lake Lanier included the boat fire Tuesday, July 3, on Lake Lanier near Gainesville Marina.

The Gainesville man jumped ship after seeing smoke, and he was uninjured.

“The other was an individual with a cut to the hand while lowering an anchor,” McKinnon said.

McKinnon said no serious injuries were reported on Lake Lanier.
