A fifth Army soldier who was stationed at Dahlonega’s Camp Frank D. Merrill was arrested Wednesday in connection with a federal drug conspiracy investigation.

Sandeo Pablo Dyson, whose age and rank were not available, was arrested Wednesday by Army officials and agents of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives at Fort Carson, Colo., in connection with an undercover operation that saw four soldiers stationed in Dahlonega, including three Rangers, charged last week, according to Patrick Crosby, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia.

Dyson joins Army Rangers Carlos Lopez, 30, David Ray White, 28, Randy Spivy, 32, and Army medic Stefan Andre Champagne, 28, in facing charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine. Dyson knew the other four men and was stationed at Camp Merrill before transferring to Fort Carson, Crosby said.

Federal authorities said an undercover ATF agent, acting on information that certain soldiers were interested in robbing drug dealers, approached the soldiers with a fictional plan. The plan involved robbing a Mexican drug cartel of 25 kilos of cocaine at gunpoint in a home invasion in the Sandy Springs area.

Officials say the soldiers agreed to the mission and planned to sell the stolen cocaine. They were arrested on Jan. 24 and Friday.

Dyson also faces arson charges in connection with a January 2007 fire at Club Onyx, an Atlanta strip club, Crosby said.

On Wednesday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Alan Baverman held a bond hearing for the four Georgia soldiers. The hearing went into the early evening and will continue Monday. The men remain in federal custody until then.
