Bus wreck leads to 3 minor injuries

Three Hall County students complained of minor injuries Thursday morning when two school buses hit head-on at Memorial Park Drive and Atlanta Highway.

"They were treated and released to the custody of the principal, who was on site," said Gordon Higgins, school system spokesman, referring to Lyman Hall Elementary School principal Lois Myers.

"And (there was) a bus there to transport them on to school, including those who said they had some minor injuries."

The wreck happened at about 7:15 a.m. when a school bus heading north on Atlanta Highway turned left onto Memorial Park Drive in front of a bus traveling south on Atlanta Highway, Higgins said.

The bus headed north toward Lyman Hall was occupied by only the driver.

The other bus also was headed to Lyman Hall, which is off Memorial Park Drive, with about 70 Lyman Hall students. "Being a (substitute) driver, he missed the turn and kept going," Higgins said.

The driver heading north "anticipated seeing the other bus turning (right toward Lyman Hall)," Higgins said. "When the bus didn’t turn, it (struck) the bus that turned left."

Motorists traveling south and turning right at the intersection must yield to left-turning traffic.

"The bus (driver) who turned left is still at fault, of course, because he didn’t yield the right of way — he should have done that anyway."
