Give your curves some decorations

Along with the 5K runs, luncheons and other special events marking October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Curves of Flowery Branch is getting creative.

Specifically, the ladies who work out at Curves have divided into 10 teams, each with the task of decorating a bra for a special event Oct. 29 when Diane Hirling, mayor of Flowery Branch, will come by to judge the finished creations.

The event also will include a visit by the Care-a-Van mobile mammography unit, which is taking appointments for mammograms, and a representative from Nordstrom's will be on hand to correctly measure women for a bra. The day's events will be from 9 a.m. to noon at Curves.

About 85 percent of women are wearing an incorrect bra size, said Curves manager Laurel Drew, and this is a chance to make sure what you're wearing is correct. Curves is also offering a special DVD program to help women detect breast lumps, as part of a partnership the franchise has with Olivia Newton-John.

And as for the decorated bras, Drew said the ladies have just started adding their flourishes.

"They just started today, but I've got them hanging all around the Curves," she said. "I've got 10 bras hanging up and they all have a name like ‘Hooters' or ‘Loveable,' and there's just bowls and bowls of decorations."

But will the women sport the bras come Oct. 29, when the judging starts?

"These girls are wild and crazy - so most likely," Drew said.
