Gary Lewis and Tracy Kelley Gaines of Gainesville announce the engagement of their daughter Kelley Denise Gaines to Courtney Lee Friedman, son of Maurice Jack and Gilda Whitaker Friedman of Greensboro, N.C.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Elmer Ellsworth III and Wylene Bender Kelley of Lakeland, Fla., and Lewis Kater and Merle Pinson Gaines of Gainesville.

She is a 1998 graduate of Gainesville High School in Gainesville. She graduated in 2002 from the University of Georgia in Athens with a bachelor's degree in fashion merchandising. She received a master's degree in 2007 from the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. She is employed as a teacher with Charleston County School District in Charleston.

The groom-elect is the grandson of Gilmer S.T. and Lucy Leigh Whitaker of Pilot Mountain, N.C., and Albert Phillip and June Friedman of Greensboro, N.C.

He is a 1997 graduate of Page High School in Greensboro. He graduated in 2002 from the College of Charleston with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He is owner and CEO of Lowcountry Laundry and Dry Cleaning in Charleston.

The couple plan to wed Dec. 12, 2009, in Charleston.
