UNG musicians, singers to sound off this fall season

Sounds of the fall and holiday season will ring throughout Northeast Georgia as the Department of Music at the University of North Georgia hosts several free concerts this month and in December.

Kicking them off will be the UNG Orchestra performing Handel’s “Messiah” in collaboration with the Dawson Community Chorale.

This presentation will be unique compared to traditional “Christmas” Messiah concerts. It will include favorites from the “Easter” portion of Handel’s classic, such as “The Trumpet Shall Sound” and “Worthy Is the Lamb,” along with the ever-popular “Hallelujah Chorus.”

“This venture will provide a wonderful opportunity to combine the best of both worlds in a special blending of university and community resources,” said Dr. Joe Chapman, concert pianist and UNG director of keyboard studies. “The result should be nothing less than spectacular. As a special local touch, the soloists will consist of Chorale members along with UNG Music Professor Dr. Benjamin Schoening.”

Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at the Hoag Student Center Auditorium on UNG’s Dahlonega Campus and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at First Baptist Church in Dawsonville.

Tickets are $10. UNG faculty and staff and Dawson County Arts Council members get in for $5. The concert is free to all UNG students with a valid ID.
