Now that Christmas has come and gone, a lot of folks are probably wondering what to do with that live tree that stood so elegantly in the living room. But there is an option. Instead of littering the backyard with decaying arbors, North Georgia Zoo is encouraging people to bring the trees in for recycling. You might look at the trees now as being useless, but they can be utilized for many purposes at the zoo. The trees can be used as food, treats, toys and even homes for many of the zoo animals. There are some standards that the trees must meet in order to be animal-friendly, though. Only natural trees are accepted, and no trees that have been sprayed with chemicals can be taken. Trees with tinsel and decorations still on can’t be recycled, and the zoo can only take green, healthy trees that are not yet decaying. Tress can be dropped off at several points in the area. There are two drop-off points in Cleveland. White County Farmers Exchange, located at 951 Main St. South and Ash Brother’s Feed, located at 195 East Kytle St. will both accept trees during regular business hours. Additionally, The Torch Worship Center at 800 Cannon Bridge Road in Demorest and the Clarkesville Veterinary Clinic at 6640 Georgia Highway 115 will accept dropoffs during regular business hours. The North Georgia Zoo is also willing to accept the trees at their location, but it is encouraged that you call first to make sure someone is available to accept the dropoff. Trees will be accepted at no charge. For organizations with 10 trees or more, contact the zoo to arrange an exchange. Recyclable trees will be accepted for two weeks after Christmas. For more information, or to arrange a pick up, contact the zoo at 706-348-7279, or visit them online at www.northgeorgiazoo.com.
