There's no better way to kick off summer than to savor the sights and smells of meat and sauce uniting over an open flame.

Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa in Young Harris offers just that at its fourth annual Horsin' Around BBQ Showdown and Festival from10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.

The competition includes 40 teams of semi-pro cookers sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society and part of the Georgia BBQ Championship Series. Guests can participate in the popular Peoples' Choice contest and judge the award-winning dishes from 11:30 a.m. until the food runs out.

The family friendly, daylong event takes place in the horse pasture at Brasstown Valley Resort. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under age 5; parking is free.

Live music at the event features Stephen Phillips & Midnight Express and The Georgia Highlander's Bluegrass Band.

Activities will include a Kids Fun Zone, pony rides, food for sale, a silent auction and raffle, and the All-American Arts & Crafts Festival.

New this year is the Winged Ambassador Birds of Prey Show and a display by the Classic Wheels Car Club.

Guests can stay for an evening of Contra Dancing from 6:30 to 10 p.m.
