Surrealist American musician Col. Bruce Hampton will perform his style of music at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 8, in Grant Street Music Room in Clarkesville.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the venue at 583 Grant St., Clarkesville.

The Atlanta-born Hampton has been kicking around the Southern music circuit since the early ’60s.

In the late 1960s, Hampton was a founding member of Atlanta’s avant-garde Hampton Grease Band. Adopting the moniker Colonel Bruce Hampton and sometimes playing a sort of dwarf guitar called a “chazoid,” he later formed other bands, including The Late Bronze AgeBruceSky, The Aquarium Rescue Unit, The Fiji Mariners, The Codetalkers, The Quark Alliance and The Pharaoh Gummitt.

Equal parts psychedelicized Allman Brothers and boogiefied Grateful Dead (with a dash of Commander Cody thrown in), Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit capitalized on the nuevo-hippie movement that swept through America in the early 1990s.
