God loves all creatures great and small, including the animals.
Grace Episcopal Church of Gainesville and the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia plans to highlight that point with the annual Blessing of Animals ceremony at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5.
“The Blessing of Animals is our way of celebrating not just the life of St. Francis, but also our reverence for God’s creation, and our calling to care for the environment,” said the Rev. Stuart Higginbotham, rector of Grace Church. “St. Francis’ love of animals reflects his awareness that all creatures are blessed and loved by God.”
The service will be on the front lawn of Brenau University, located directly across the street from the church campus in downtown Gainesville at the corner of Washington Street and Boulevard.
Pets and domestic animals of all shapes and sizes are welcome with their owners to participate. However, all animals need to be restrained with a leash. Owners will be responsible for pet waste.
Participants are encouraged to bring donations for the Humane Society. In-kind items on HSNEGA’s “Wish List” and gift cards to grocery stores, office supply stores, pet stores or Walmart, Sam’s Club or Target are welcome to purchase needed supplies. To see HSNEGA’s Wish List, visit www.HSNEGA.org.
