Icy waters for warm hearts
Eastern European-style Mardi Gras in Helen
0213-GO-Helen parade
A group of brave tubers plays music last year as they march to the Chattahoochee River through heavy snowfall to celebrate Fasching, a German version of Mardi Gras.
In southern Germany, Bavaria and Austria, Fasching equals fat Tuesday and what better way to celebrate Mardi Gras than by tubing the icy waters of the Chattahoochee River in the Alpine Village of Helen. At 2 p.m. Saturday, Faschingsverein Helen will parade around town, followed by a tubing parade through the middle of Helen. That evening, a Fasching party will be from 7-11 p.m. at the Helendorf River Inn and Conference Center, 33 Munich Strasse, Helen.
