Bigger proves to be better in the upcoming Gainesville Theatre Alliance production of "Hairspray."
Audiences will be delighted with big songs, big dance numbers and, of course, big hair.
The production will run at the Brenau University Hosch Theatre for the next two weeks.
The main character in "Hairspray" is Tracy Turnblad, a teenager in the 1960s with a larger-than-life personality and a desire to dance. After winning a spot on a TV dance show, the big-haired teen turns into a bit of a local celebrity.
Although the show is a musical comedy, it also provides social commentary on the racial injustices of that time period.
The local production is being directed by Jim Hammond and will feature Rane Tipton as Tracy. The show was choreographed by David Rossetti, who performed with the national tour of "Hairspray."
The production opens with the 7:30 p.m. Tuesday show at the Hosch Theatre inside the John S. Burd Center, 429 Academy St., Gainesville. A free, opening night reception with the cast and crew will follow the performance.
At the 2:30 p.m. performance on Nov. 19, production organizers have arranged to have a special audio service to help visually impaired attendees enjoy the show. Phonic Ear hearing-assistance devices and large print programs will be available.
Tickets for the show are $20-$24 for adults, $18-$22 for seniors and $14-$16 for students. They can be purchased online or through the theater's box office.
The Alliance is a collaboration between Gainesville State College, Brenau University, community members and area theater professionals.
