As autumn official officially arrives Monday, the Hall County Master Gardeners plan to mark the event the following weekend with its annual Fall Garden Expo.

Patti Lewis, chairwoman of the Fall Garden Expo and a Hall County Master Gardener, explained part of the Expo’s purpose is to educate the public about gardening and all of its facets as well as raise money for the Master Gardeners program. The funds allow the volunteer-certified group to conduct several of its programs such as Gardens on Green and the Redbud Project.

“And we are all plantaholics and we want the general public to develop a liking of gardening,” she said.

To show Gainesville and Hall County population the eclectic style of gardening more than 35 plant and garden goods vendors are schedule to sell their wares. The vendors from North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia will bring their knowledge and products about trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, native plants, carnivorous plants, special gardening soils, garden tools, yard art and garden ornaments, honey and beeswax products, landscape design, pottery, and  custom-made planters, raised beds and trellises.

“Each vendor brings in their own unique set of products,” Lewis said. “It’s not like going to Lowe’s or Home Depot. You might not get the unusual stuff (there).”

The fall expo will also feature four experts speaking on topics such as fall vegetables, native plants and bugs. Two speakers will deliver a presentation each day of the event at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Speakers are: Nancy Hinkle, professor of entomology at University of Georgia; Ron Brechter, a Hall County Master Gardener; Christi Bruner of the Carolina Wild Native Plant Nursery; and Valerie Wheeler of IG Nurseries.

Food vendors — Sweet Butts BBQ of Gainesville and Rey’s Cuban Cafe of Loganville — will offer refreshments both days.

The 2014 Fall Garden Expo is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Chicopee Woods Agricultural Center, 1855 Calvary Church Road, in Gainesville.

Admission is $2 for adults. Children may enter for free. Pets are not allowed. Parking is free.
