ATHENS — The UGA Performing Arts Center will present Tango Buenos Aires at 8 p.m. Saturday in Hodgson Concert Hall.

The company's program, entitled Fire and Passion of Tango, will feature dancers accompanied by an onstage orchestra playing traditional tango instruments: piano, guitar, violin, double bass, and bandoneón.

The Washington Post praised Tango Buenos Aires for its "repeatedly swirling, fast-paced tapestries of movement, laced with proud postures and sensual couplings."

Founded by the famous composer and director, Osvaldo Requena, the company has become one of Argentina's great cultural exports, known throughout the world.

Tango Buenos Aires began touring the world in 1987.

In 1991, the company performed in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand and introduced the tango to Indonesia. In 1993, it was host to a series of master classes and residencies with Chinese dancers at the Dance University of Beijing.

In 2005, Julian Vat, Argentina's most prolific composer and leading musician, assumed the title of music director of Tango Buenos Aires.
