A casino in Dawson County? Don't call Johnny Law just yet — it's all for fun.

The Dawson County Humane Society is holding its annual Lucky Dog Casino Night on Aug. 27.

Vegas-style games like roulette, blackjack, craps and Texas Hold 'Em will be featured at this year's fundraiser event, said Virginia Matteson, Humane Society vice president and head of fundraising.

"Casino Night was last year's biggest fundraising event by far," Matteson said.

Matteson says the event raised more than $9,000 for the shelter, which put a big dent in the $85,000 required annually to keep the doors open.

This year's event is very dear to the hearts of the volunteers as they are still mourning the recent death of a longtime friend and contributor, Nancy Noblin.

"Not having her support and advice makes it doubly hard. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for her," Matteson said.

Matteson said the organizers are hopeful that this year will see large crowds despite the tough economic times.

For $50, players will receive $3,000 in play chips to bring to the various tables. The object is to have the most chips at the end of the night.

Matteson said last year's first place prize was a flat-screen television. The top place finisher this year will receive a Best Buy gift card.

Not interesting in the gambling? No worries; the play money can be used to bid in a silent auction and buy raffle tickets for multiple drawings to be held throughout the evening.

Proceeds from Lucky Dog Casino Night benefit the homeless animals of Dawson County in finding homes and to support efforts to promote countywide spay and neuter programs.

"This is probably one of Dawson County's biggest events. It's a great evening of fun without having to leave town," Matteson said.

Festivities will last from 7-11 p.m. at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, located at 415 Ga. 53 in Dawsonville.
