Area residents and runners can honor and remember Georgia’s fallen soldiers who died in the war on terror in an 5-kilometer run or walk at Lanier Islands in Buford.

The Fallen Heroes of Georgia 5K run and walk will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 18, at 7000 Lanier Islands Parkway in Buford. A Peachtree Road Race qualifier, the race will be held rain or shine.

Signs representing each of the 228 fallen Georgia soldiers will line the course to emphasis the men and women who gave their lives serving the country.

Registration costs $40 by March 12 or $45 on race day. Runners may register at RunSignUp.com through March 12. Participants must also pay a $5 vehicle pass to enter the resort on race day.

T-shirts for race-day registrants will be available while supplies last.

Runners receiving awards will be the first-, second- and third-place finishers for men and women; male and female masters of 40 and older and grand masters of 50 and older; the top three male and female finishers in 14 age groups; and top 10 percent of race finishers.

Fallen Heroes of Georgia Inc. raises funds to support the following charities: Evan Marshall Memorial Scholarship Fund, Matthew Freeman Project, Noah Harris Fund, Ashley Henderson Huff Memorial Scholarship, Whitlock Foundation, EOD1 Joseph A. McSween Scholarship Fund, Lt. Helton Memorial Foundation, Sgt. Paul Saylor Bremen Scholarship Fund and the Mike Stokely Fund.
