Ever wonder where your electricity got its start? Wonder no more. The Arts Council, Gainesville State College and South Arts will present "The Electricity Fairy" with director Tom Hansell at 7:30 p.m. April 14.

The screening is part of the South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers and will take place at the Continuing Education Building room CE 108 on the Oakwood campus of Gainesville State College (Landrum Education Drive).

"The Electricity Fairy" examines America’s national addiction to fossil fuels through the lens of electricity. The film follows the story of a proposed coal-fired power plant in the mountains of southwest Virginia and connecs the local controversy to the national debate over energy policy.

Coal produces half of America’s electricity, and the energy policy currently before Congress identifies coal as a key to America’s "energy independence."

Present-day documentary footage is mixed with early educational films, connecting past policy to America’s current energy crisis.

Hansell is a documentary filmmaker and installation artist who lives and works in Appalachia. He teaches Appalachian Studies and Documentary Studies at Appalachian State University and has 20 years of experience at Appalshop.

He is the recipient of grants and fellowships from the Kentucky Arts Council, the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. His most recent documentary project, "The Electricity Fairy" premiered in 2010 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Following a screening of his feature film, the audience will be allowed to ask Hansell questions during a discussion about his work as a filmmaker. A reception with Hansell will be provided by The Holbrook of Lake Lanier catering services.
