Veterans and Community Outreach Foundation members hope their latest efforts hit the right note in Gainesville.

The nonprofit has combined two of their missions — filling community voids and helping veterans — into one event, a night of grooving to classic R&B tunes at 8 p.m. Saturday.

"We saw this as a way to bring the community together and to get a dialogue going," said Lewis McTush, a member of the foundation's board of directors.

"We run a veterans services program, but we also hold monthly events to bring the community together. In talking with some of the older folks in town, they told us that they don't have a lot of places to go for entertainment."

The event will be held at the N V Lounge, 116 Bradford St., Gainesville.

Recording artist Jeffree "J.C. Baby' Charles," who was the slow jams disc jockey on KISS 104.1 for eight years, will perform, as will the Ladies of Soul, McTush said.

"They are going to be doing all of the favorites from back in the day when music was music," he said.

Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for veterans. Any vets who doesn't have the cash to cover admission won't be turned away, McTush says.

Although Saturday's event is about enjoying a pleasurable night of live music and dancing, the foundation will still be taking care of business when it comes to helping veterans.

"So many veterans don't realize all of the benefits that they've earned. It can be something as simple as going to the VA hospital. A lot of vets seem to think you have to be injured to go there, but that's not true," McTush said.

"We're going to have a table set-up (on Saturday) with information about the foundation, the services we offer and how we can help veterans."
