With the Holiday Season nearly upon us, the Holly Theater in Dahlonega is helping folks get into the spirit with the Holly Performance Academy's performance of the classic Christmas tale "Babes in Toyland."

Formerly known as the Holly Children's Theater, the Holly Performance Academy is a group of children and young adults showcasing their theatrical talent.

Performances mark the directing debut of Stephanie Neuman, Holly Theater executive director Geoffrey Kridel said.

Kridel said that the production of "Babes in Toyland" will feature 28 players ranging in age from small children to young adults.

"It's a wonderful Christmas production. It's a very fun, bright-colored show with lots of singing. The performances are our take on the standard, wonderful story," Kridel said.

"We like to do things like this to get families out of the house and out enjoying something real, instead of being stuck inside."

"Babes in Toyland" tells the story of orphans Jane and Alan, who are the targets of their Uncle Barnaby's greed. Barnaby and his assistants arrange the "accidental death of the children in an effort to steal their inheritance.

After surviving a shipwreck, the kids must try and make their way home through trials and tribulations. It is a story of hope, determination and steady resolve in standing up for beliefs.

Kridel said the Holly Theater has been considering adding the classic play as a regular staple for its holiday season performances.

The show opened Nov. 12, and performances continue this weekend at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday.

Kridel said the theater accommodates 300 people, and he expects that the last three shows will draw close to a full house.

Tickets are $15, on sale online, or by calling 706-864-3759.
