Are you craftier than a Boy Scout?

Chris Brooks, the director of the Folk Pottery Museum, will teach a class in the basics of wood carving. These classes will be taught from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesdays, Sept. 9, 16 and 23 in the Sautee Nacoochee Center’s art studio. This class will introduce students to wood carving based on the requirements of the Scouts’ Woodcarving Merit Badge.

The cost for three two-hour sessions is $90. Learn about woods, knife-sharpening, safety and other basic carving skills. Although no merit badges will be awarded, students should successfully complete several small projects such as scarf slides, brooch pins or small figures.

Carving blanks will be provided by the instructor. Students will need to bring a carving glove, a thumb protector and a Butz carving knife. All materials are available from Woodcraft on the web.

The Sautee Nacoochee Center is located at Ga. 283 and Ga. 255 N. in Sautee Nacoochee. For more information, contact Chris Brooks or Jim Thomas at 706-878-3300.
