The Friends of the Parks Annual Butterfly Release is Sunday at Wilshire Trails Park in Gainesville. The event will be from 1-4 p.m. with the release of the painted lady butterflies scheduled for 3 p.m.

More than 1,500 painted lady butterflies are set to take flight to the delight of hundreds of children Sunday in Gainesville.

The 19th annual Friends of the Parks Butterfly Release will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at Wilshire Trails Park along Pearl Nix Parkway in Gainesville. Admission is free and parking is available at Woods Mill Academy, Centennial Arts Academy and Gainesville High School. Free shuttle service will run continuously from these schools to Wilshire Trails Park.

Activities for children will last for three hours and include paper sailboat races and face painting.

Then at 3 p.m. every child in attendance will be given an envelope containing a butterfly to release into the park. In case of rain, butterflies will be released under the pavilion.
