The Lanierland Amateur Radio Club will play host to the second annual Bringin' Home the Bacon 5K run Saturday. The race is the club's annual fundraiser to benefit ham radio operations.

The race will begin at Oakwood City Park, 4009 Railroad St. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the race takes off at 9 a.m. Registration is $25 on race day.

Club board member and race coordinator Phillip Loggins wants people to understand the value of ham radio.

"For over 45 years, ARC has assisted Hall and other nearby counties in disaster and emergencies through use of the radios," Loggins said. "We try to be there when the need arises, and we're glad to be able to be there and to help people."

Loggins said that runners will appreciate the improved course this year.

Best overall times for male and female competitors will be awarded. Additionally, the top three runners in each age group will be recognized. Age groups range from 10-and-under up to 75-and-older.

Loggins said the inaugural race last year saw about 50 participants, and that the club expects an even better turnout this year.

"It seems to be a fairly popular event. Plus, Georgia hosts the most 5K runs of the states in the Southeast, so there are people who will want to get in on it," Loggins said.

Proceeds from the run will support ham radio activities in the area, including emergency communications, public service and training for area hams.

Lanierland Amateur Radio Club owns and maintains equipment on nearby Wauka Mountain, and Loggins said proceeds from the race will help keep it in service.

"It's a worthy cause, and we'd love people come out and enjoy a beautiful fall Saturday," Loggins said.
