One-man plan tours across North Georgia

Charles Dickens is on tour in Northeast Georgia — or at least actor James Ridge portraying Dickens.

“Dickens in America,” a one-man play, will be presented tonight in Dahlonega and Saturday and Sunday in Buford.

Dickens arrived in New York in 1867 for a reading tour, and Ridge picks up that story on his final stop during the American tour.

Dickens’ health was failing but he slipped from character to character and back to himself with witty dialogue and off-the-cuff insights, according to a news release from the Gainesville Theatre Alliance about Ridge’s performances.

Ridge will perform at 7:30 p.m. today at the University of North Georgia’s Gloria Shott Performance Hall in the Nix Mountain Cultural Center, 322 Georgia Circle, Dahlonega. He’ll perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Sylvia Beard Theatre in the Buford Community Center, 2200 Buford Highway, Buford.

Tickets are $5 for the university performance and $10 for the Buford performance, though students can still obtain tickets for $5.

To purchase tickets, visit or call 678-717-3624 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. today or 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.
