For the second consecutive year, the University of North Georgia women’s basketball team is going dancing in March.
After defending their Peach Belt Conference title on Sunday, the No. 22 Lady Nighthawks (27-4) earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Division II tournament, and will face off against No. 7 seed Emmanuel College Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Anderson, S.C.
It is North Georgia’s third-ever appearance in the tournament, and the first time it has qualified in consecutive years in school history.
“It means we’ve built some consistency,” North Georgia coach Buffie Burson said. “I’m really proud of them. It’s a great feeling, but it’s not an overnight thing.”
The Lady Nighthawks enter the event on a 13-game winning streak, including a perfect 3-0 mark in the Peach Belt Conference tournament. And if history is any indicator, the team is likely to keep that streak going.
North Georgia has won at least one game in each of its last two tournament appearances, including victories over Barton and Wingate last year before a loss to Carson-Newman in the round of 16.
“We’re hoping that’s going to help us if we get in those situations again,” Burson said.
