High school tennis: Flowery Branch, Gainesville boys and girls teams open season with wins

The Flowery Branch boys tennis team began the season with a 5-0 sweep of Apalachee Thursday evening. 

Singles players Will Hernandez, Jack Thomas and Gunnar Hetzel all won 6-0, 6-0, while Matthew Helms/Nate Shedd took home a 6-1,6-0 victory, and Mason Freeman/Riley Poole won 6-1, 6-3. 

The Falcons will travel to take on Mill Creek on Feb. 4.

FLOWERY BRANCH GIRLS 5, APALACHEE 0: Alyssa McSpadden, Olivia Nance and Sandra Hernandez won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0. Julianna Velaj/Polina Chernikova won 6-0, 6-2, while Madison Sedwick/Faith Marx were 6-1, 6-0 victors.

GAINESVILLE BOYS 4, NORTH FORSYTH 1: Dylan Pineda and Truett Keener each took home singles victories. Teams of Caleb Anderson/Charlie Burns and Samuel Holt/Andrew Elliott won in doubles.

GAINESVILLE GIRLS 5, NORTH FORSYTH 0: Hannah Williams and Kate Abernathy each won singles matches in straight sets, while Emmaline Dye fought her way to a three-set victory. Teams of Callie Patterson/Mia Lily and Page Thompson/Carolina Brown swept the doubles.
