Four Gwinnett Braves pitchers combined to hold the Durham Bulls to one run and lift the G-Braves to a 3-1 win Sunday at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville.
Joe Thurston slammed a two-run homer and Barbaro Canizares went 2-for-3 to lead the offense. Canizares remains atop the International League in hitting with a .333 average.
Gwinnett trailed early, but capitalized on a pair of Durham errors in the sixth inning to seize the lead. Durham’s Brian Baker absorbed the loss, yielding just one earned run on five hits in six innings.
He was matched by Gwinnett’s Jose Ortegano, who worked five innings and gave up one run on five hits. Cory Gearrin (two innings, two strikeouts), Eric O’Flaherty (in his second rehab appearance) and Craig Kimbrell (who picked up his 19th save) combined for four innings of scoreless relief.
Gwinnett opens a two-game series with Norfolk at 7 p.m. Monday at Lawrenceville. Todd Redmond (9-10, 4.27) is scheduled to start for the G-Braves.
