All five local volleyball teams won their first round matches in the state tournament last week, and all five will play Tuesday for a shot at the third round and a ticket to the championship bracket.

North Hall (25-20) will travel to Sandy Creek (40-7), the top-ranked team in Class AAA, for a 6 p.m. start. Gainesville (24-12), playing in its first postseason in program history, heads to Locust Grove (29-17) for a 5:30 p.m. start. West Hall (35-7) will play at Veterans (25-14) in Macon at 5:30 p.m.

In Class AA, Buford (23-13) travels to Eagles Landing Christian (33-7) for a 5 p.m. start. Jefferson (32-9) is the lone area volleyball team to host in the second round as they welcome Hebron Christian (27-19) at 6:30 p.m.

Softball: Four area teams entered the state playoffs. After one round, only Buford remains.

Defending Class AAA champs White County fell to Allatoona, No. 2-seed Dawson County fell to Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe and top-seed Union County was upset by North Murray. The Panthers’ loss gives No. 2-seed Buford, which took down Manchester in two games, an unlikely home game in the second round.

The Lady Wolves (27-10) will host North Murray (18-13) on Wednesday.

High school football: Class AA No. 1 Buford (8-0, 2-0 6A-AA) may face its toughest test of the season when the Wolves host No. 3 Greater Atlanta Christian (7-0, 2-0) this Friday at Tom Riden Stadium in a matchup of the final two undefeated teams in the subregion. The game can be heard on 550-AM.

College football: Georgia Tech (6-1), which saw its six-game winning streak to start the season snapped at Virginia on Saturday in a 24-21 defeat, travels to Miami (3-3) on Saturday.

Georgia (5-2), which defeated Vanderbilt 33-28 last Saturday, has a bye week before traveling down to Jacksonville, Fla. to play at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 against the Florida Gators (4-3).

Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons (3-3) travel to Detroit to visit the Lions (5-1) this Sunday. Atlanta topped the Panthers and sensational rookie quarterback Cam Newton 31-17 on Sunday.
