Recent Gainesville High graduate Spencer Ralston finished second Sunday in the Georgia Amateur Golf Championship at the Brookhaven Course of Capital City Club in Atlanta. The runner-up finish was Ralston’s highest spot in the event of the top amateur golfers in the state.

Colin Bowles, from Albany, went ahead for victory by taking No. 17. Bowles got hot down the stretch, taking 4 out of 5 holes on the back nine, despite trailing by three to Ralston.

Ralston, a University of Georgia signee, led in the finals, 2 up, after nine holes Sunday, then took No. 10.

After rain halted play Saturday, Ralston returned to the course Sunday to finish a 3 and 1 win against Georgia Tech signee Luke Scheiderjans in the semifinals.

Bowles, 16, is the youngest winner at the Georgia Amateur since 14-year-old Bobby Jones won the first outing in 1916.

Ralston finished the two-day, 36 hole stroke play portion of the event with a 2-under par. For the weekend, 32 golfers made the cut.
