Local sports briefs: Frankum wins local golf tourney

Gainesville High golfer Will Frankum shot an even-par 72 to win the 15-18 Division Tournament on Tuesday at the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta.

Gainesville Middle School golfer Spencer Ralston also qualified for 10-11 year old division of the Optimist Junior World Golf Championships from July 23-28 at the PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens.

GAS race moved to August

The Georgia Asphalt Series Super Six Challenge race scheduled for July 25 at Lanier National Speedway has been moved to Aug. 1.

The race was moved so that it did not conflict with the ASA Late Model Series Series, which many GAS drivers also participate in.

Georgia Games coming to Riverside Military

Riverside Military Academy is playing host to the 2009 Georgia Games Weightlifting Power Bench Championships at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Riverside’s indoor fieldhouse.

First, second and third place in weight class receive a Georgia Games medal. United States Powerlifting Federation Certificates will be available in the event of any new state records.

Entry fees are $37 for powerlifting and $27 for bench press.

For competitors wanting to compete in additional events, the cost is $16.

Athletes may compete in a maximum of two divisions.

Bulldogs fill up preseason team

Nine University of Georgia football players have been named to the 2009 Southeastern Conference Coaches Presason All-SEC team, according to an announcement from the league office Thursday.

The Bulldogs are tied with Alabama with the third-most players selected to the team behind Florida (16) and LSU (10).

Wide receiver A.J. Green is Georgia’s lone selection on the first-team offense. He is one of only two sophomores named to the first team.

Linebacker Rennie Curran was also named to the first team defense for the Bulldogs.

Offensive linemen Clint Boling and Cordy Glenn earned second-team offense honors, while Trinton Sturdivant was named to the third-team offense.

On defense, defensive tackle Geno Atkins and defensive back Prince Miller made second-team defense. Defensive tackle Jeff Owens and safety Reshad Jones were named to the third team.

Ryan honored at ESPY awards

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan recently won an ESPY Award for the Best Breakthrough Athlete.

Through fan balloting, Ryan topped Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose, Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria and U.S. Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson to win the award. Ryan was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2008 after guiding the Falcons to an 11-5 record and playoff appearance in his first years as Atlanta’s signal caller.

He completed 265 of 434 passes for 3,400 yards, 16 touchdowns and a 87.7 passer rating. He is only the second rookie quarterback to pass for over 3,000 yards.

Thrashers land free agent forward

The Atlanta Thrashers agreed to terms with restricted free agent forward Colby Armstrong on Thursday, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell.

Armstrong, 26, appeared in all 82 games for the Thrashers, recording 22 goals and 18 assists for a career-best 40 points. His totals were good for fifth on the team in points and four on the team in goals.

The 6-2, 195-pound Sasketchewan native has 51 points in 100 games over two seasons with the Thrashers.

Fox Sports Net to air 7 SEC games

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Fox Sports Net will televise seven Southeastern Conference football games this season.

The network has reached a multiyear deal with ESPN, which secured the rights to league content last August. The specific football games and length of the deal were not announced. Fox Sports South, Sun Sports and Fox Sports Southwest will carry at least 91 SEC athletic events each year.
