Local sports briefs: Brenau kicking off softball season

The No. 11-ranked Brenau University tennis team visits Francis Marion University at 2 p.m. Feb. 8 in Florence, South Carolina.

The Golden Tigers are coming off of a successful 2007 season, with a 15-9 record and champions of the Southern States Athletic Conference.

Paula Gilardotti, Jolene Wong, Diana Cardenas and Natalia Arangurena all return from last season’s team. Golden Tigers coach Gordon Leslie will introduce three new members to the 2008 roster, adding Shkurte Ejupi, Nelli Martirosyan, and Liubov Orlova.

Brenau University plays host to Reinhardt College at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 12 in Gainesville.

Brenau softball ranked third in preseason poll

The Brenau University softball team was picked third in the preseason coaches poll in the Southern States Athletic Conference.

The Golden Tigers open the season ranked behind No. 1 Lee and No.2 Shorter.

Brenau plays host to Shorter to open conference play at 5 p.m. on March 4 in Gainesville.

Chestatee soccer set to kick off

The Chestatee High boys and girls soccer teams play host to Clarke Central in exhibition matches at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Gainesville.

The War Eagles play host to Stephens County at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 14 to open the regular season.
