The Brenau University basketball team won one of the biggest games in its brief history Thursday, upsetting Shorter, 68-60, in Rome.

Shorter (17-7, 10-4), which was just outside of the NAIA Top 25, held an eight-point halftime advantage, but Brenau roared back in the second half, thanks largely to its 19-for-23 effort from the free throw line.

Junior guard Lori Pope led the Golden Tigers (15-10, 7-8 Southern States Athletic Conference) with a career-high 22 points, inlcuding six of 11 3-pointers. Sophomore Vicky Wilson added 15 points, converting 12 of her 14 free throw attempts.

Brenau has now won four straight and five of its last six as the Tigers continue to fight for spot in the conference tournament. They return to action today against Berry College in Rome.

Benson posts career-high
Gainesville High graduate Brent Benson hit five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 28 points for Texas State on Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough to lift to Bobcats as they fell, 81-77, to McNeese State in Southland Conference action.

Texas State (11-12, 4-6) returns to action at 4:05 p.m. today, playing host to Lamar. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Net Southwest.
