BRASELTON — Despite the lightning, thunder and dark clouds, the track at Lanier National Speedway only received a light rain that did not disrupt Saturday night’s racing action.
In the Open Wheel Modified race, Joey Love was the winner, with Charlie Barrett coming in second.
After the race, Charlie Barrett protested the outcome and wanted an end-to-end inspection of Love’s No. 25 car.
Love has dominated the Open Wheel Modified competition at Lanier this year. Barrett said their car was in the best condition it has been in all summer and still could not manage to unseat the 25 car from first place. Love said that the inspection was all just a part of racing.
"I’ve been expecting it," Love said. "I would have done the same thing."
Love and the car’s owners watched as it was taken apart under the close supervision of track technical director, Wayne Evens.
Barrett’s technical consultant evaluated and inspected each part in question. The inspection failed to reveal any violations in the rules and Love was confirmed the winner. It was unclear if the inspection cleared the air between the two drivers. Barrett said that he would have to be faster and better in the future.
In other action, Mark Wilbanks of Cleveland took his first win in seven tries in the truck series race; Paul Kelly returned to the winner’s circle for the late model competition; and Jason Hogan returned home to win the Super late Model race.
Hogan, who has been racing in the Southern All Stars, ASA and PASS, has won five out of six races at Lanier.
