Johnson beats Oglethorpe County, 38-0, snaps 24-game losing skid

Sam Corbett rushed for a 30-yard touchdown and ran another in on a fourth down during the first half for Johnson as it topped Oglethorpe County 38-0 on Friday in Lexington. With the win, Johnson snapped a 24-game losing skid, dating back to 2015. 

“I am still making sure it is not a dream I already pinched myself three times,” Johnson coach Jason Roquemore said.

Also scoring in the first half for the Knights (1-0) was Gary Daies, who punched it in on a 30-yard run. 

In the second half, Corbett, a four-year starter, ran for a 70-yard score. Also in the second half, Daies ran it in on a run from the 3.

“It was awesome and cool to do it with some of these guys it was a great atmosphere and the way we did it with a 38-0 win is darn good,” Corbett said.

Johnson’s last win before the season opener was against Riverside Military in 2015.

“I am so proud of them how they fought and the way they executed the whole game,” Roquemore said.

Jackson Barkley hit a 37-yard field goal for the Knights. It marked Johnson’s first shutout victory since beating Madison County, 17-0, in the 2015 opener. 

With the win, Johnson hosts West Hall on Friday in Oakwood. 

BUFORD 40, TUCKER 14: Derrian Brown rushed for 142 yards and posted four touchdowns for the Wolves (1-0) in their season opener Friday at the Georgia State Stadium in the Corky Kell Classic in Atlanta. Buford quarterback Aaron McLaughlin threw for 154 yards with two touchdowns for the Wolves, while teammates Austin Turner had 106 yards in receiving with another score. Jack Scroggs led the Buford defense with five tackles. Carson Patel had an interception for the Wolves.

Buford hosts Jonesboro at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Tom Riden Stadium.
