ATLANTA — Dream coach Marynell Meadors said Thursday that six-time All-Star Chamique Holdsclaw has asked Atlanta to trade her.

Holdsclaw called Meadors three days prior to training camp and asked a trade, the coach said during the team's media day.

Meadors, also Atlanta's general manager, said she is not opposed to giving Holdsclaw what she wants.

"When a player asks for a trade, something is wrong and they don't want to be here," the coach said. "So if they don't want to be here, then they don't need to be here. Out of respect for her, I'm trying to get her to another place."

Holdsclaw had no comment when reached by phone on Thursday.

The 32-year-old forward came out of retirement and averaged 13.9 points a game last season, helping the Dream go from four wins in their inaugural season to 18 and a playoff berth last year.

Meadors said she doesn't know why Holdsclaw wants to leave Atlanta after the 6-foot-2 forward sounded positive throughout the offseason about returning for a second season.

Meadors said she had hoped Holdsclaw would finish her three-year contract she signed last year.

"She was all fired up about this season," Meadors said. "I don't know what changed. I have no idea what happened."

Meadors said she is trying to workout a Holdsclaw deal before by 2 p.m. Friday — the deadline for teams to turn in final rosters for the 2010 season.

Holdslcaw retired after seven seasons in the WNBA. She played five games with the Sparks in 2007 and averaged 15.8 in those contests. For her career, the forward has averaged 17.7 points and 8.3 rebounds a game.
