White County's Gearing takes state title at Class AAA girls track meet

As a freshman, White County’s Jenna Gearing has taken the Class AAA long distance events by storm.

Already a cross country state champion, Gearing finished in first place in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11 minutes, 21 seconds at the Class AAA girls track state meet on Thursday at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

She also took second place in Friday’s 1600 event with a time of 5:22.09. Teammate Kristen Mitchell was third, finishing in five minutes, 24.64 seconds.

North Hall’s Victoria Rogers took fourth place in the 1600 with a time of 5:25.31, and fellow Lady Trojan Makayla Ellis was eighth with a time of 5:35.68.

Outside Class AAA on Friday, Kristin Moroz of Chestatee took eighth in the Class AAAA high jump, and teammate Tori Mullinax came in seventh in the AAAA 1600, finishing in five minutes, 24.66 seconds.

In Class AAAAA, lone Flowery Branch competitor Alisha Parks placed seventh in the discus event, throwing 109 feet, one inch.

Rounding out Friday’s local competitors was Jefferson’s Reese Bowles, who took seventh in the Class AA 1600 with a time of 5:45.83.

The 100 dash, 200 dash, 400 event, 800 run, 400 relay, 1600 relay, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles finals all race tomorrow with opening ceremonies at beginning at 11:15 a.m. in Albany.
