West Hall High volleyball coach Joe Nelson will retire at the end of the current school year after coaching in the state since 1995.

In his career between North Carolina and Georgia, Nelson won 430 matches, which is second highest among active coaches in the state.

In Georgia, his teams made six appearances in the state volleyball tournament, advancing to the Sweet 16 five times. In addition, his teams were Area runners-up on five occassions.

Nelson came to Georgia in 1995 to coach girls basketball at Habersham Central. When he had inquired about also coaching volleyball, which he had done in North Carolina, he was told that Georgia did not offer volleyball in their high school sports.

He moved to North Hall in 1999 and started its volleyball program.

It was also during that time that Nelson and Piedmont College volleyball coach Sid Feldman started the North Georgia Volleyball Camps at North Hall and Chestatee High Schools to help promote the growth of the sport.

Two current head coaches in Hall County (Julie Rushing, Chestatee and Emi Hughes, North Hall) played under Nelson at North Hall.
