There have been a lot of one-word campaigns over the years, but none quite as famous as the one used in the 2008 presidential race when most of the country was captivated by “change.”

Gainesville senior running back Tyson Smith has seen his fair share of change in the Red Elephants’ program this year.

Playing on an offense that boasts two Division I prospects in quarterback Blake Sims and wide receiver Tai-ler Jones, and a versatile running back in Teryan Rucker, Smith is often overshadowed by his playmaking teammates.

But that changed last Friday against White County.

Coming in as quarterback in Gainesville’s new Wildcat formation, Smith threw two touchdowns to Sims, who is verbally committed to Alabama; and Sims returned the favor by throwing a pair of touchdowns to Smith.

For the game, the senior running back totaled 219 all purpose yards in Gainesville’s 42-20 win over White County.

Smith shined in a program where it is extremely difficult to get noticed rushing for 126 yards on 24 carries, posting 86 yards receiving and throwing for 148 yards; showing his ability to remain versatile and adapt to unfamiliar situations.

“He is an overall athlete,” Gainesville coach Bruce Miller said of Smith. “He could play any sport he wanted to. He’s always had the ability, and it’s good to see him putting it all together this season.”

When asked about how it felt to play in a foreign position Smith smiled slightly and said, “It felt good, I was kind of nervous at first.”

Whether or not Smith will line up as quarterback again in the season still remains uncertain, but as Smith puts it, “I want to be anywhere the coaches put me to play.”
