The Gainesville boys basketball team lost Troup 86-57 on Friday night in LaGrange in Class AAA state playoff action.

The Red Elephants, seeded No. 3 out of Region 8, saw their season end at 19-9. No. 2-seeded Troup out of Region 6 will play the winner of Washington-Murray County on Wednesday.

Gainesville never led in the game, quickly falling behind 6-0. The Red Elephants were down 13 at halftime and never pulled closer than 11 in the second half.

“We picked the wrong time to not play well,” Gainesville coach Todd Cottrell said. “We just didn’t do what we needed to and Troup played fantastic basketball.”

Eric Bridges and Lakeithin Buckner each scored 25 points for Troup. A.J. Johnson led Gainesville with 12 points

“It’s a disapointing way to end a good year,” Cottrell said. “I think if we would have played better we would have felt a little better about ourselves.

“But I’m proud of the year this group had. We had some young players at key positions and I think we have a good future.”
