Prep roundup: Lady Knights win in OT

Haley Chapman scored a career high 24 points, leading the Johnson to a 53-51 win against Flowery Branch on Friday night in Flowery Branch.

Trailing 53-51 with 0.2 seconds left in overtime, Flowery Branch’s Jessica Hart hit a layup, but officials determined that the ball remained in Hart’s hands as time expired and the Lady Knights earned their second overtime win this season.

Mary Fiorentino led the Lady Knights (2-11, 1-1 Region 7B-AAA) defensively with four steals, including a steal that set up a Chapman 3-pointer that sent the game into overtime. Chapman finished the game with six 3-pointers. Jordan Gustavel and Anna Beth Peace finished with nine points each for Johnson.

Kayla Smith led the Lady Falcons (6-7, 0-2 Region 7B-AAA) with 23 points.

Johnson visits Hart County at 6 tonight, while Flowery Branch travels to Buford at 4 p.m.

Flowery Branch boys 84, Johnson 57
The Falcons scored 22 points in the first quarter and 24 points in the second quarter to build an early lead against the Knights.

Flowery Branch (12-2, 2-0) was led by Josh Barrett, who scored 22 points and added eight steals. A.C. Bailey scored 16 points and Brian Welchel added 12 points and six rebounds.

Johnson’s Brandon Sloan led the team with 18 points and Devaris Finch scored 14 points for the Knights.

The Falcons will travel to Buford today at 5:30 p.m.

East Hall boys 79, Lumpkin County 37
Senior point guard Dedric Ware had a game-high 17 points in the Vikings win Friday night at East Hall.

The stingy Vikings’ (11-4, 2-0) defense allowed for only 14 first-half points while their high-powered offense hit for 58 in the first half sealing the win by halftime.

Lumpkin County (2-11, 0-2) was led by Shawn Chapman who finished with 12 points.

The Vikings return to action at 7:30 tonight at Gainesville while Lumpkin County next plays Tuesday at Gilmer.

Gainesville girls 48, West Hall 31
Jaymee Carnes scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, pacing the Lady Red Elephants to a victory Friday night in Gainesville. Hailey Solomon added 10 points for the Lady Red Elephants (12-3, 2-0 Region 7B-AAA).

West Hall’s Jayla Moon led all scorers with 18, while Kim Smigelsky added 11.

Gainesville plays host to East Hall at 6 p.m. tonight. West Hall entertains Pickens at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

West Hall boys 47, Gainesville 46
Junior Terrell Penland scored 14, as West Hall squeezed past Gainesville on Friday night. Shunquez Stephens added seven for the Spartans (7-7, 1-1 Region 7B-AAA).

Martin Estes led Gainesville (6-7, 1-1 Region 7B-AAA) with 18 points.

Gainesville plays host to East Hall at 7:30 tonight, while West Hall plays host to Pickens at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Buford girls 61, Avondale 49
Buford got back to its winning ways, defeating Avondale on Friday night in Buford. Blanche Alverson led the Lady Wolves (12-2, 7-1 Region 6-AA) with 22 points. Jocelyn Danley added 15 points and Michelle Godwin finished with 11.

Buford plays host to Flowery Branch at 4 p.m. today.

Dawson County girls 53, East Jackson 47
Katie Lebell led all scorers with 20 points as the Lady Tigers moved to 1-1 in their subregion. Katelyn Westbrook scored 15 and Amanda Daly added 10 points for Dawson County (8-6). East Jackson was led by Dynelle Toddman, who scored 19 points.

The Lady Tigers play again at West Forsyth today at 6 p.m.
