North Hall's Michael Carew repeats as wrestling state champion in Class AAAA

North Hall senior Michael Carew repeated as a state champion, winning at 160 pounds, and leading the Trojans to a second-place finish in Class AAAA at the traditional wrestling championship meet Saturday at the Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth.

Also for North Hall, Nick Whitmire won the title at 170. Isaiah Hale finished second for North Hall at 182, and Matt Glenn took third at 106.

The Trojans finished with 141 points, ahead of third-place Buford (124.5). Gilmer won the team title.

Chestatee’s Marvin Cunningham won the Class AAAA state title at 138. For Buford, Jack Barber (145) won a championship, while Logan Ashton (106) and Jack Ness (195) each took second. Trent Ferguson placed third for the Wolves at 138.

In Class AAA, Jefferson had six wrestlers earn state titles, earning the program’s 16th consecutive state championship at the individual state meet. Winning state titles for Jefferson were Mitchell McGhee (120), Tanner Thurmond (132), Will Ballard (152), Caleb Little (182), Deshon Lester (195) and Nick Holman (285).

The Dragons earned the state title with 273 team points, well ahead of second-place Ringgold. Banks County placed fourth.

Ian Statia (106) and Dawson Bates (113) were runners-up for Jefferson, while Cole Potts took third at 126.
