Buford softball qualifies for elite eight

The Lakeview Academy volleyball team picked up a win against Jefferson 21-25, 25-22, 25-17 and then lost to Athens Academy 25-21, 25-17 on Saturday in the Region 8-AA tournament in Jefferson. With the split, the Lady Lions (16-17) are going to the Class AA state tournament as the No. 3 seed.

Louisa Jacobs finished with 13 kills and three aces for Lakeview, and Megan Rochester added seven kills and seven blocks. Morgan Black added four kills and six blocked shots for the Lady Lions, and Emily Norton had 30 assists.

Breanna Holcomb had three digs for Lakeview Academy. Liz Clark added five kills and two aces for the Lady Lions.

The time and place for Lakeview’s playoff match is still to be determined.

Softball

Lady Wolves headed to elite eight

The Buford High softball team qualified for the Class AA state quarterfinals with a 5-0 win against North Oconee in the North Sectionals on Saturday at Heritage Point in Dalton. Karly Fullem earned the win for Class AA’s No. 1 ranked Lady Wolves (30-2-1) with nine strikeouts and only allowed two hits.

Chelsie Thomas had two hits and scored two runs for Buford. Lexi Overstreet had a double and drove in a run, and Kallie Case scored two runs and drove in an RBI. Alysha Rudnik also drove in a run for the Lady Wolves.

The defending Class AA state champions finished the state sectionals outscoring the opposition 17-0 in three games. Buford’s pitchers combined for 27 strikeouts and only allowed five hits over 20 innings pitched.

Buford faces an opponent still to be determined at 2 p.m. Thursday at South Commons in Columbus to open the elite eight.
