Lady Red Elephants trounce Pickens

The Lady Red Elephants took an 11-4 lead early in the game hitting 4 of 6 from the field including three 3-pointers and didn’t look back en route to a win Saturday in the Region 7-AAA quarterfinals at Chestatee High.

With the win, Gainesville once again moves into the state tourament and the region semifinals where it will face Flowery Branch at 7 p.m. Monday at Flowery Branch.

Pickens, despite shooting only 24 percent in the first half and 33 percent for the game, kept it close until the last minute of the third quarter.

It was at that time that Gainesville hit for five straight including a jumper by Jaymee Carnes and a Carnes’ pass to Mikalyn DeFoor for a 3-pointer to take a nine-point lead.

Carnes finished as the game’s leading scorer with 17 points and six rebounds.

DeFoor finished with 10 points.

Gainesville took its biggest lead of the game, 13 points, with just under five minutes remaining in the game on a 6-2 run capped by another Carnes assist, this time to Kate Callahan for a layup.

Jazmine Goss led Pickens with 13 points and five rebounds.
