HS wrestling: North Hall's Marett, Kratzer in state finals

North Hall’s Taylor Marett (106) and Tyler Kratzer (145) both advanced to the Class AAA traditional wrestling state finals on Friday at the Macon Centreplex in Macon.

Marett (49-7) defeated Buford’s Darius Bunch 7-3 to earn a spot in the finals, and Kratzer (52-1) beat Evan Cole of
Cartersville 2-1 in his semifinal match.

East Hall wrestlers Edward Vergara and Corey Reece both finished the first day of the AAA State Championship with 1-1 records. Vergara (152) defeated Houston Steward from Cartersville 11-4 in his first match before falling to Appling County’s Demarko Dixon to fall into the consolation semifinals. Reece lost to Woodward Academy’s Chad Pyke by pin fall in the first round before bouncing back to beat Ryan Grady of Blessed Trinity 4-3. He will take on Marlon Morales from Rockmart in this morning’s consolation semifinals.

Vergara will face familiar foe Elliott Raiford of West Hall in their consolation semifinal match. Raiford (43-4) fell to Central Carroll’s Jarrett Thomas by pin fall in the first round but defeated Hart County’s Brandon Webb 3-2 in his second match of the day, leading him to Vergara.

Also in Class AAA, Banks County has seven wrestlers in the finals. Chris McCrackin will wrestle North Hall’s Marett for the 106-pound title. Mason Patton faces region opponent Brayden Hartley of Buford in the 126-pound final match, and Wes Faulkner will wrestle Pyke of Woodward in the 160-pound final. Eli Smallwood faces Jackson County’s Daivon Ledford in the 170-pound finals, and in the same weight class, Dawson County’s Evan Kells will compete against Swainsboro’s Dalvin Lott in the consolation semis.

Banks County brothers Hayden Dilbeck (182) and Matt Dilbeck (195) are also in the consolation semis. In the AAA 182-pound final, Chip Ness of Buford will go up against Dawson County’s Gavin Brown once again. The Wolves’ Jack Barber is in the finals as well, going up against Marshall Brown of Oconee County at 113 pounds. Lone White County wrestler Andrew Posten is in the 195-pound consolation semis, taking on Israel Wheat of Carver.

In the Class AAAA tournament, two Chestatee wrestlers are still alive. Jose Reyes-Lavallee will again face region foe Blake Wilson from Monroe Area in the 106-pound consolation semifinals. Teammate Bart Velasquez will wrestle Caleb Mariakis in the 113-pound consolation semis.

Three Flowery Branch wrestlers will represent the team in the consolation semifinals as well, with Zach Winter wrestling Union Grove’s Luke Parker at 138 pounds, Brady Dyer taking on Caleb King of Loganville at 152 pounds, and Grant Simonds facing off against Ola’s Jaden Smith at 182 pounds.

The tournament starts back up with the consolation semis for all classes beginning at 9:30 this morning, followed by consolation finals and championship finals from the Macon Centreplex in Macon.
